About us

Our mission is to create a Heritage Centre at Blackbushe Airport celebrating over 80 years of the Airport's unique aviation history during WW2 subsequently becoming  London’s 'second airport' during the 1950’s. Central to this is the restoration of a rare 1946 Vickers Viking airliner known as G-AGRW or “Vagabond”,  now returned to her former home at Blackbushe.

The Blackbushe Heritage Trust is formed not only to restore an historic aircraft, it's further objectives are to encourage and involve engineering apprentices as an introduction to aerospace engineering and the vast career opportunities that may follow, while fostering a local community spirit with opportunities for all to become involved. Above all, it will become a Heritage centre for the benefit of generations today and far into the future.

The Viking was Britain's first commercial airliner following the cessation of World War Two, serving with British European Airways (BEA), and numerous independent airlines. No less than nine Viking equipped airlines were based at Blackbushe between 1946 and 1960, the type playing a vital part in the Airport and the nation's aviation heritage.

"Vagabond" has already been successfully returned from years languishing on an airfield in Austria to Blackbushe - as reported on BBC TV -  the restoration work is now about to start!

Blackbushe has a rich and varied history, originally known as RAF Hartford Bridge, it  served as a wartime RAF transport, fighter and bomber base, playing a major role on D-day and during the Berlin airlift, then in the 1950’s becoming London’s second airport after London Airport (now Heathrow). Blackbushe was also the US Navy's only UK land base. Famed for its superb fog free record Blackbushe received commercial flights diverted from what is now Heathrow. Being built on a natural plateau, Blackbushe is very much a 'natural' airport.  Closed by the government in 1960 as Gatwick was chosen for development, much of the site was subsequently purchased by AVM "Pathfinder" Bennett, becoming an important General Aviation facility serving business flights from across Europe, a home to many private aircraft, and base for leading flying schools.  Throughout its life Blackbushe has many fascinating stories to tell!

Blackbushe Heritage Trust provides a much loved and valued service for the community.

Thank you for your support and good luck!
